A PCIe riser card moves or turns a motherboard PCIe slot so an add-in card fits a chassis it otherwise could not. In a 1U server the case is about 44 mm tall and a full-height card stands about 111 mm; the riser turns the card parallel to the motherboard. That is the whole job.
PCIe doubles its signaling rate every generation; Gen5 runs 32 GT/s per lane. The faster the link, the more trace length and ribbon quality matter. A riser rated for the generation it carries runs at full speed. A riser pushed past its rating can train down. Every Ameri-Rack board is published with its rated generation.
Four measurements decide it: the chassis height (1U or 2U), the position of the motherboard slot against the rear cutout, the card length, and the link generation. If the cutout sits directly over the slot, a fixed riser does it. If not, a flexible ribbon or MCIO cable covers the distance. The Riser Finder asks these questions and names the part.
A riser built for the link generation it carries runs at full speed. Problems appear when a board rated for an older generation carries a newer link; the connection can train down to a lower speed or lower generation. Match the riser rating to the slot generation.
A bifurcation riser splits one x16 slot into two or three electrical links, such as x8/x8 or x8/x4/x4, each with its own slot. The motherboard BIOS must support bifurcation on that slot; the riser provides the mechanical split.
Yes. The split happens in the motherboard firmware, not on the riser. If the BIOS has no bifurcation setting for the slot, a bifurcation riser will show only the first device.
A fixed riser is one rigid board; the card lands exactly where the mechanical drawing says. A flexible riser puts a ribbon between the gold finger and the slot, so the card can sit beside the board, above it, or at a right angle.
A bridge riser can. It carries a bridge chipset that translates PCIe to PCI-32, which keeps a legacy capture card, DAQ board or controller in service on a current motherboard.
